About
I have been drawing the Scraps the Cat comic strip since May 21, 1994, filling up notebooks with dozens of comics that were never intended to be seen by anyone but me. It might have stayed this way except that a few years later I offered to provide a comic for the Brooks Family Newsletter-- and my Scraps the Cat characters seemed like a logical choice. So, Scraps the Cat made his published debut in early 1998.
I have continued to draw the comic for many years, and while the published comics (which appear on this website) are only a small fraction of the total number of Scraps comics, I feel that these published ones represent the best of my comic work at this point. Looking through the comics, it is easy to see a shift in style; this change in style was influenced largely from my interests in cartooning shifting to that of animation rather than static comics.
Currently there are two sets of comics available on the site, the main "Scraps the Cat and Friends" comic, and a short side series called "Scraps the Cat: Missionary Edition" which presents a humorous look at the life of a Mormon missionary. This second set grew out of one or two sketches that I made just for fun, but they proved to be so popular among our local missionaries that I wound up making several of them, and all can be seen here.
The goal of "Scraps the Cat and Friends" is to provide simple and clean entertainment to people of all ages and from all backgrounds. My readers range greatly in age and generation, and not all of my readers even speak English as a first language. I try my hardest to keep this in mind as I write each comic. Pop culture references or aspects that might be largely unknown are kept to a minimum. Instead, "Scraps the Cat and Friends" strives to be use everyday, self-reflexive humor based on little life experiences that everyone can understand, regardless of background. It is very difficult to write for this style of humor, but I feel that it is an important part of the comic's identity and I would like to preserve it as much as I can.
Each comic is hand-drawn and hand-colored; the lettering and word bubbles are added later via computer. Currently you can expect a new comic once every few months... it's not very often, I know, but this was never meant to be a full-blown webcomic; it is simply an archive. (This may change at some point, however...)
I would like to extend gratitude to my friends and family who have offered me advice and given me a "fanclub" that has encouraged me to continue making my comics even during those times when I didn't feel like continuing. I would especially like to thank my Mom, for always being supportive and understanding... and Nick, my other half and best friend, for always being there for me and for utilizing his amazing talent to help me design this webpage. I love you guys!
If you have any questions or would like to contact me, please feel free to do so. I would love to hear from you!
